Canberra Qwire

Canberra Qwire welcomes members from the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities across the LGBTQIA+ communities, as well as our allies. Our choir consists of approximately 100 members ranging from late teens right through to the wiser generations; all drawn together by their common love of music and singing.

Qwire acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we sing and come together. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.  We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded and that this was, always will be Ngunnawal land.

We pay our respects to the Ngunnawal people of this region and say to you, with their permission, Yuma - Welcome.

Qwire brings together people from diverse sections of the queer family to challenge stereotypes and build a bridge between Canberra’s queer and non-queer community. Since the founding members of Qwire  stood up with pride in the 90s, Qwire has become increasingly diverse, welcoming people who identify not only as gay and lesbian, but also as asexual, bisexual, pansexual, genderqueer, genderfluid, intersex, trans and allies of the queer community..

Qwire is highly regarded not only for its vocal strength and performances, but also for its relaxed and social atmosphere.

Qwire believes that everyone can (and should) sing, so there are no auditions. Regardless of experience or level of skill in music, anyone can indulge their passion for singing and develop their skills. Weekly rehearsals may include a mix of vocal activities, stagecraft and choreography.

We perform within Canberra each year at various events, including our own concerts (1 or 2 each year) and social and remembrance functions held by other queer community groups (AIDS Candlelight Memorial, Fair Day). Some years we sing at major events such as Floriade, the National Folk Festival or the Canberra Show. We have also performed at venues such as the High Court of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House and the British High Commission. Qwire performed extensively during the Marriage Equality campaign in 2017.
