Canberra Qwire, Proudly LGBTIQ+, seeks new Musical Director

Canberra Qwire is seeking a new Musical Director, to start in the first semester of 2022.

Canberra Qwire welcomes members from the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities across the LGBTIQ+ range, as well as our allies. Qwire membership is around 100, with around 60 singing at any one time. Ages range from late teens through to the wiser years. No auditions are required. We rehearse weekly, usually in a school hall in north Canberra.

We are a popular Canberra choir. Our recent concert at Llewellyn Hall drew an audience of around 500. We sing a wide range of music, selected from a range of styles designed to appeal to the cross section of our membership and our audience.

Qwire is an incorporated organization, administered by the Qwire Committee which sets the Qwire objectives, manages funds and activities, and is governed by the Qwire constitution.

We perform each year at a variety of events, including our own concerts (one or two per year). We regularly sing by invitation at the AIDS Candlelight Memorial in May, World AIDS Day in December, and at SpringOut and Fair Day events. In 2019, we hosted Out and Loud, the Australasian LGBTIQ+ choir festival, where we welcomed Australian, New Zealand and Pacifica choirs.

Qwire enjoys performing with other Canberra choirs and choirs in our region.

For our new Musical Director, we seek a person with
  • Demonstrated musical skills with experience of teaching and conducting non-auditioned choirs
  • Enthusiasm and energy to motivate and inspire this singing group
  • Ability to work in harmony with the Canberra Qwire Committee and the Music Team
  • Flexibility to adapt to the changing conditions of the Covid 19 environment.

The new Musical Director will lead our Music Team, consisting of our Assistant Musical Director, and our accompanist.

An Honorarium is provided for this position and will be negotiated based on skills and experience.
